And brands can get involved and use to market themselves.
The fashion of the early 2000s is making a comeback, and it's all thanks to Gen Z's obsession with nostalgia.
From low-rise jeans to tube tops, fashion items that were popular in the early 2000s are suddenly in high demand. TikTok, the platform popular among Gen Z, has played a significant role in the resurgence of this trend.
We'll explore how brands can get involved and use this trend to market themselves.
Let’s take it back to the early 2000s Fashion Trend, the 2000s was an interesting time for fashion. The decade was marked by a mix of different styles, from preppy to punk to bohemian.

These styles were popular among celebrities and everyday people alike, and they've now made a comeback in the world of fashion.
The Role of TikTok
TikTok has become the go-to platform for Gen Z to discover and showcase the latest trends. The app's algorithm promotes content based on users' interests, so it's not surprising that the early 2000s fashion trend has taken off on the platform.
Yes, we’ve been deep in the 2000 nostalgic rabbit hole! We think (Rochelle) that this was such a fun time for fashion, TV shows and being celebrity obsessed. As we do a lot of work for brands on TikTok, we’ve found that Gen Z users are loving the Y2K fashion throwbacks.
From re-creating Y2K looks, bringing back velour tracksuit, platform shoes and butterfly clips, there is something that they are loving.
These videos and hashtags are gaining millions of views and are inspiring other users to try out the trend for themselves. Check out some of the users looks here.
Forever21 x Juicy Couture
This hasn’t gone unnoticed by brands, as recently (March 2023) two legendary brands Forever21 and Juicy Couture have come together with TikTok-er Alix Earle to release their Festival campaign collaboration.
Alex Earle is known for her busy nonstop life and so this collaboration made sense, as the brand makes sets and tracksuits that work for locations from a pool party to an airplane.
As Alix is a fan of Forever21 and has been from a young age, it made sense for the brand to partner with her on their festival campaign (It’s a Coachella Vibe).
The Forever 21 x Juicy Couture collection is bringing back the fashion brand's nostalgic styles made famous in the early 2000s, worn by celebs like Paris Hilton, Beyoncé and Britney Spears. Latest offerings from the collab include velour tracksuits, embellished shorts, dresses, tube tops and more of Juicy Couture's signature styles. The pieces are offered in a range of colors from bubblegum pink to classic black and in sizes XS through XL. As we’ve mentioned Throwback trends are having a big moment right now.
How can brands get involved?
So, you want to have some fun with content and get involved in a bit of nostalgia while hitting that Gen Z audience, we have some tips for you to get involved;
Create content featuring early 2000s fashion
Yes, this may sound crazy, but hear us out. Create videos and social content showcasing your brand's take on early 2000s fashion. This could include outfit inspo featuring iconic pieces from the era or even trainers and accessories. Just a quick search on TikTok you’ll see how brands and creators are getting involved and having fun.
Collaborate with TikTok creators
We can’t stress this enough (plus we always go on about it). Partnering with TikTok creators who are already creating content around the early 2000s fashion trend can be a great and easy way to promote this. If you want to, work with the creators native on that platform to help promote your brand/style to their followers, not to mention increase reach, shares and engagement.
Create a collection inspired by the trend
Sometimes easier said then done, but if you have certain items that you can mix and match together you can create a collection of clothing and accessories inspired by the trend. Make sure that the looks are inspired by the trend and add in new trend pieces.
Remember: this is about working with the trend and not trying to recreate it (unless you want to). You could simply add Von Dutch or bucket hats, massive glasses etc to complete the look.
Use early 2000s fashion in your advertising
You can incorporate early 2000s fashion into your advertising campaigns - again we recommend investing in paid marketing activity to support any campaign you want to create and run. This could include using creators, to create their own looks inspired by 2000, it could be a new collection or even your own customers UGC (user generated content). The impact that this has on ads and content for your brand makes it more relatable and customers will like the fact that they can see themselves in your marketing. This will make everyone feel inclusive and create sharable moments.
We don’t know if this trend is here to stay, but it's a great opportunity for brands to get involved, have fun and market to Gen Z. By creating content, collaborating with creators and incorporating the trend into advertising, you can take advantage of this nostalgic trend and appeal, reach and engage to a new generation of consumers.
